Born in Florence, de Reggi studied the classics and was schooled throughout Europe, Latin America, the Far East, Australia and India.
As Margaret Sheffield noted in her catalogue essay accompanying the exhibition, “As in Surrealism or Metaphysical art, Emanuele de Reggi joins together disparate elements which normally don't belong together, creating a counter reality beyond that of what one perceives as the everyday real world....The ideas of passage and symbolic journey from one dimension or state of consciousness to another, and from everyday time to eternal time, are the dominant themes of the new work...De Reggi hopes to evoke the viewer's unconscious mind and invite multiple interpretations.”
De Reggi’s sculptures embody a commonality among cultures and racial distinctions. His figures stand triumphantly at the top of a stone tower, climb precariously out of a giant bronze bowl, or balance on the edge of a sloping base, conveying a sense of majestic isolation. Each tells a story of a reality extended beyond our own; a oneness between the natural and the artificial, the ephemeral and the lasting, the abstract and the literal. Like de Chirico, de Reggi sets out to reveal the mysteries of the universe concealed behind the veil of the visible.
His work has been exhibited extensively in Europe as well as the United States. The artist divides his time between Rome, Florence and his studio in Carrara.
