ITHACA REGAINED
GREEK ARTISTS IN NEW YORK
Curated by Dr. Irving Sandler
Kouros Gallery
is pleased to present Ithaca Regained - Greek Artists in New York, an
exhibition highlighting the contribution of living artists of Hellenic descent
to the cultural life of New York City. Under the auspices of The Consulate General
of Greece, the exhibition is in collaboration with the Program in Hellenic Studies
at Columbia University. An opening reception will take place on April 14th from
3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Kouros Gallery, and Dr. Sandler will deliver a lecture on
the role of Hellenic culture in American modern art on April 18th at 6:30 p.m.
at Columbia University. For one day on Tuesday, April 24th from 6:00 - 8:00
p.m., the Consul General of Greece in New York will exhibit works by the participating
artists.
Featured artists
in Ithaca Regained are: Steven Antonakos, Alexandra Athanassiades, Lynda
Benglis, Thomas Chimes, Chryssa, Nassos Daphnis, Cris Gianakos, Steve Gianakos,
Morfy Gikas, Mark Hadjipateras, George Negroponte, Lucas Samaras, Athena Tacha,
Philip Tsiaras, Sophia Vari and Nicolas Vlavianos. All 16 artists are Greek-Americans
and/or Hellens who have lived in New York for significant periods of time and
have assimilated Americas modernist artistic tendencies. Ithaca Regained
calls attention to the Hellenic cultural consciousness of the participants and
how their work reveals its interplay between their Greek heritage and American
experience.
As unique individuals
with different psychological makeups, personal experiences, and above all, individual
artistic visions, each artist has contributed greatly to the art world while
continuing to broaden their contemporary artistic vocabularies.
A fully-illustrated catalogue is available with an essay by Dr. Sandler.
